How Do I Choose The Right Grey For My Home?

November 25, 2016 By Debbie Palic

Which Grey?

The other day my client asked me how do I choose the right grey for the interior of my home? I replied by saying that selecting the right grey can be a challenging task as there are a few important factors that you need to consider. I explained to her that everyone has a preconception of what grey should look like, it may be grey driftwood, grey storm clouds, grey bark on trees, or even grey river pebbles. All of these greys will differ from one another based on the undertone of the colour.

A warm grey will have an undertone of red or brown. I can’t go past Grey Pebble and Heiffer from the Dulux range. A cool grey will have an undertone of green or blue. Some of my favourite cool greys are Grey Pail and Tranquil Retreat. Very stylish, if these wall colours are paired up with white wood work.

I went onto explaining that selecting the right grey is a timely process and involves using a few sample pots. To create a sample board, apply two coats of paint on to a piece of white card board. View the board in the space at different times of the day. This is important, as the light levels in the room will affect how the colour will look.

Before you make your final selection, consider the aspect of your room. If your room faces south, it will be a cool room and you might like to warm it up with a warm grey. Alternatively, a warm north facing room would suit a cooler grey.

Gradually eliminate the colour sample boards you do not like and you will end up with your best colour choice for the room.

If you still have your arms up in despair and can’t find the right grey for your home consider booking a Colour Consultation. My service involves a site visit and I bring along all my tools of the trade, including files of A4 colour samples, fan decks and my large Dulux Colour Atlas book. Following the visit, a colour specification report is issued to the client and their painter.
