When I design contemporary open planned kitchens, I love to include hanging pendant lights for these reasons:
(1) Kitchen Aesthetics
Hanging lights can enhance the overall look of your open planned kitchen and adjoining living area. This is achieved by selecting a specific style of pendant to complement the kitchen or by creating a statement with contrasting shades. The look of the pendant will affect the mood of the space. For instance a pendant light made of a natural material will have a softer feel than a concrete shade.
Pendant lights can make an artistic statement as in the photo below, this will enhance the overall look and feel of the kitchen.
I like to use coloured pendants to jazz up neutral kitchens. As brightly coloured pendants will add life and personality to the space.

(2) A Great Lighting Source
I tend to use pendant lights over kitchen island benches. As pendant lights can provide suitable task lighting when using a fixture that is directional. The light fittings must be in proportion to the island bench, the larger the space you want to illuminate the larger the pendant.
When the island bench is not in use, pendants can create soft ambient lighting in the space by installing a dimmer.

(3) Create Zones
I use hanging lights to create visual zones within an open planned kitchen living area. Pendants highlight an adjoining dining area, they can also add visual interest to one end of an island bench. Clustered pendants can be hung at varied heights for even more visual impact.
